Tourists face lengthy queues in sweltering heat when Qld reopens

Queensland-bound holiday-makers have been warned to pack plenty of patience and expect to queue in searing heat unless indoor health restrictions are eased.

Industry leaders have been heavily lobbying Queensland Health for weeks to ease its one person per two square metre rule indoors before Christmas to avoid bedlam on the streets at holiday hot spots.

Queensland Hotels Association chief executive Bernie Hogan said the rule gave the impression hotels and restaurants were operating at 50 per cent capacity when it was far from reality.

He said business owners had to make allowances for furnishings and clearances for fire exits within its floor space, meaning the 50 per cent rule cannot be used.
