Swimmer drowns on Gold Coast beach

A man has drowned at a Gold Coast beach on Saturday morning, becoming the third person in less than 36 hours to lose their lives in treacherous surf conditions.
Critical care paramedics confirmed they responded to an incident at Mermaid Beach near Hedges Avenue at 7.41am.
There, they treated a man in a critical condition but he could not be saved.
Surf lifesavers, who were setting up for the day pulled the man from the water and performed CPR for about half an hour, says Queensland Ambulance senior operations supervisor Jayney Shearman.
