Motorbike licensing changes, retraining proposed as riding deaths nearly double this year

Queensland Police say there has a been a concerning spike in motorbike fatalities and serious crashes this year, and a large portion have been older men returning to the hobby.

According to QPS, almost a third of the state’s fatalities this year involved motorbikes and in 90 per cent of the cases the rider was at fault.

The alarming figures have prompted warnings from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to riders, citing a spike in bike sales and registrations.
