Leave Now warning issued for Cathedrals
Campers, holiday-makers and residents on Fraser Island have been urgently warned to “leave now” as a “dangerous” bushfire tears through the popular tourist island.
The blaze has been burning since October 14 and was allegedly started by an illegal campfire.
It was expected to hit the Cathedrals township within 4-6 hours (approx. 4.30-6pm Saturday).
Guests at the Cathedrals on Fraser campsite have been evacuated and anyone due to arrive today has been contacted, a Facebook post by Cathedrals said.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said at 12.25pm, the fire, which was “getting worse”, was travelling from north of Lake Bowarrady near Awinya Rd, south to Cathedrals on the east side of the island.
