The DNA sensor cyclic GMPAMP synthase (cGAS) initiates innate immune responses following microbial infection, cellular stress, and cancer. Upon activation by double-stranded DNA, cytosolic cGAS produces biochemical reactions that activate the body’s so-called “innate” immune system.
