Australian shares lower as fresh fears of virus lockdown grow from Sydney’s northern beaches cluster

Fresh lockdown fears following a growing coronavirus cluster in Sydneys northern beaches have weighed heavily on the performance of the local sharemarket, which has slumped after setting a new 100-day high on Thursday. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index dropped 81.2 points, or 1.2 per cent lower, to 6675.5, with large falls felt across the travel, financial and commercial property sectors. Materials was the best performing sector of the day.
