‘Animal cruelty’: Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir appears in court
A prominent thoroughbred trainer who worked on a Melbourne Cup-winning horse is accused of animal cruelty. In 2015, Darren Weir was photographed celebrating after a horse trained by him, Prince of Penzance, won the Melbourne Cup under jockey Michelle Payne with incredible 100-to-1 odds.
But from that high, the 50-year-old’s career has sunk to a racing ban and criminal charges, with the industry star appearing on Tuesday in Ballarat Magistrates Court accused of “torturing” prize racehorses.
