The AFL has announced the fixtures for Round 8 of the 2020 season. The league was unable to announce the full list of games expected to be crammed into the season schedule while Victorian clubs are on the road in their interstate bubbles because of the schedule chaos that last week saw every home team play away from their official home stadium.
The Round 8 schedule shows the Gold Coast Suns will play the club’s first ever school-night prime time game after being booked in to host the Western Bulldogs on Thursday, July 23, at Metricon Stadium.
It is the first time the club has ever played football on a day other than Saturday or Sunday — 206 games after the club first entered the competition in 2010.
The round will include matches in Western Australia, NSW, Queensland and South Australia.
It will also include a dramatic return to Monday night football which will come at the expense of a second Saturday night game.
The match-ups include the grand final replay between the Giants and the Tigers in western Sydney and the blockbuster showdown between West Coast and Collingwood at Optus Stadium in Perth.
AFL fixture boss Travis Auld said in a statement: “It is important for us to remain flexible and agile, and I would like to thank the clubs and players, who continue to embrace the unique challenges the season continues to throw up.
“As we set ourselves for the next few weeks, our upcoming block of matches from Round Nine will feature non-traditional timeslots as we look to compress some additional games into the fixture.”
