Authorities in Florida will release more than 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes in a bid to cull insects carrying deadly diseases.
The pilot project, approved for 2021 and 2022 in the Florida Keys, is designed to test if a GM mosquito is a viable alternative to spraying insecticides.
Officials want to try to control the Aedes aegypti, a species of mosquito that carries several deadly diseases, such as Zika, dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever.
