Scientists have solved a notoriously slippery riddle that has tormented rail commuters for decades: how can a handful of leaves on the line be capable of wreaking such havoc?
The leaves may look innocuous and very few actually land on the tracks themselves. However, when crushed they can break down to form an extraordinarily slick black paste. A tiny amount is capable of reducing the friction between the wheel and the rail to the kind of levels seen between an ice-skate and an ice rink.
