Naomi Osaka’s stance against mandatory press engagements during the French Open shows the shy tennis star has found a voice as a quiet activist.
Standing on stage having just won the 2018 US Open, her first slam, should have been a high point of Naomi Osaka’s life.
It hadn’t come easy, after her champion opponent Serena Williams argued explosively with the umpire over code violations that cost her a crucial game.
As the trophy ceremony began, Osaka’s lips formed a weak smile.
But boos began to fill Arthur Ashe stadium and the 20-year-old started to cry, pulling her visor down to cover her eyes.
