World’s biggest miner says new rules are needed to protect health and safety, but unions argue workers just want to be ‘treated like adults’
BHP is enjoying booming iron ore and copper prices as many economies start to recover from the pandemic.
Miners are also set to benefit from the shift away from fossil fuels, which will require more materials such as copper and nickel used for electric wiring and batteries.
Mike Henry, the chief executive of BHP, told a conference last week: “The outlook for our commodities is compelling.”
The FTSE 100 company said the new rules “underscored BHPs commitment to the health and safety of its people”…
