An Al Jazeera journalist has dismissed claims the news organisation, located on the besieged Gaza strip, housed senior Hamas commanders.
Jamal Elshayyal told Today that Saturday’s Israel air strike on the media centre – which was occupied by Al Jazeera and Associated Press journalists – was aimed at clamping down on free reporting by media.
The Israeli military gave people inside the building only 60 minutes’ warning to evacuate.
Elshayyal dismissed claims the building was used as a Hamas headquarters.
