Health warning over Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) detected in Western Sydney – 7NEWS.com.au
Authorities say that while the infection is rare, it is fatal if not prevented with early treatment.
Health authorities have issued a fresh warning after a virus was recently detected among bats in Sydneys west.
The Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is urging the community to avoid handling bats over fears the Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) may be transmitted to humans.
WSLHD Public Health Unit Director Dr Shopna Bag said that eleven people had already been referred to the Public Health Unit after being scratched or bitten by a bat in the area this year.
Four of them required treatment.
