F1 unveils plans for 100km sprint qualifying races, with championship points up for grabs
Formula One teams and bosses have agreed unanimously to debut a new points-scoring “sprint qualifying” at three races this season.

- F1’s Ross Brawn says the sprint races won’t overshadow the Sunday’s usual grand prix format
- The British Grand Prix and Italian Grand Prix are expected to host the two European sprint races
- Teams will get more cash to meet the extra expenses
The experimental format will feature a qualifying session after the first free practice session on Friday to determine the grid for a sprint race on Saturday that serves as qualifying for Sunday.
