Third of Queensland councils’ books at ‘high risk’: Auditor-General
Four more Queensland councils have been added to the list of 25 considered at “high risk” of becoming financially unsustainable, now about one-third of the sector, the Audit-Office’s latest review of local government books has found.
The findings sparked calls from Queensland Auditor-General Brendan Worrall for a shake-up of how grants are handed to local governments amid continued concerns about the sector’s financial sustainability, governance and IT vulnerability.
Total council expenses rose three per cent to $11.2 billion in 2019-20, while debt jumped 16 per cent to a total of $10 billion, almost double the figure of two years ago.Credit:Louise Kennerley
