Migration slump could gift SEQ a building ‘catch-up’ decade

Lord mayor Adrian Schrinner played the Olympic card heavily, pointing to the likelihood half of the world’s population could be watching an opening ceremony at a renewed Gabba, after an International Olympic Committee decision expected on July 21 or 22 in Tokyo.

After announcing the likely $1 billion stadium plans this week, the state government has sought to put pressure on the Commonwealth to come forward with money to help fund the bid before an IOC deadline on Monday.

“Now, I genuinely believe there’s a bright future with or without the Olympics, but I think the future is even brighter with that opportunity,” Cr Schrinner said.
