Queensland records seventh death from COVID-19 after a returned traveller dies in hospital

An 80-year-old Australian man has died from COVID-19 in Queensland.

He was an Australian returned traveller who had been living in the Philippines, who was diagnosed in hotel quarantine and admitted to Prince Charles Hospital on March 25.

Dr Jeannette Young said the man acquired the virus in the Philippines, despite transiting through Papua New Guinea. 

It is the seventh death in the state from the disease, the first to be recorded in Queensland since last year. 

Former Papua New Guinea Eastern Highlands governor Malcolm Smith died from the virus in Queensland last week, but his death was not recorded in the state’s statistics because the case was diagnosed in Papua New Guinea.
