The Australian Rugby League Commission has approved the addition of an 18th player

The NRL has been under increasing pressure to follow the AFL’s example in introducing a concussion substitute.
Key points:
- NRL teams can field an 18th player after three players from a team fail HIA tests
- The 18th player must be an emerging player
- The new rule will commence from round five after the ARLC has consulted the RLPA, clubs and coaches
The discussion was top of the Australian Rugby League Commission’s meeting today, where it gave in principle approval for clubs to use an 18th player.
The need for the 18th substitute was glaringly obvious last Saturday night when Cronulla’s bench was ravaged and the side was reduced to 13 men before half-time in their 28-4 loss to the Eels.
