Crime statistics highlight impact of coronavirus lockdowns in Victoria

Breaches of public health orders and a spike in family violence have laid bare the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Victorian crime.
Key points:
- There was an overall crime increase of 2.3 per cent to the end of December
- Family violence offences were up by 9.4 per cent
- More than 35,000 breaches of health restrictions were recorded
Crime Statistics Agency figures for 2020 released today show recorded offences increased overall by 2.3 per cent.
There were 37,505 breaches of the Chief Health Officer’s orders, most of which happened in the period between April to October as Melbourne and Victoria endured lockdowns.
While the pandemic caused some offences to drop sharply, there were significant jumps in other areas.
