AFL confirms the approval of medical substitute for use by teams in 2021
AFL teams will include a 23rd player in their matchday squads after the league, on the eve of the 2021 season, confirmed the introduction of a medical sub.

- AFL clubs will be able to replace a player who has been concussed or suffered a match-ending injury, using a new 23rd player in the matchday squad
- Coaches have been concerned that with reduced interchanges, losing one player could lead to more injuries through fatigue
- Earlier this year, the AFL mandated an increased 12-day break for any player with concussion
The new rule was announced on Wednesday, just a day before last year’s premier’s Richmond plays Carlton in the traditional season opener at the MCG.
