Tasmania’s housing crisis is forcing young people like Brayden and Ruby into homelessness
Devonport teenager Brayden Randall has spent the past six months homeless.

- Tasmanian people aged 16-24 account for one-third of the public housing waitlist
- In 2020, an average of 499 young Tasmanians accessed specialist homelessness services on any given day
- There are 55 shelter beds in the state and 100 supported accommodation apartments, but the state government is planning to build more
“Back at home, there were nine other people in the house, myself being the 10th person, and it was a three-bedroom place, so already no room for anyone,” Mr Randall said.
“Struggling to feed an extra mouth, so I just couldn’t be there.”
He got by couch surfing and staying in shelters in Devonport and Burnie but he dropped out of school.
