Meaghan Scanlon: Qld bans plastic straws
Queensland has banned a host of single-use plastic and polystyrene items in a bid to protect the state’s “world-renowned natural features”.
Plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates as well as polystyrene foam food containers will be banned from September 1 after the state government passed new legislation on Wednesday.
Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said there had been “overwhelming community support” for banning the products amid concern that plastic pollution was killing the state’s wildlife.
