A batch of rice seeds brought back by China’s Chang’e-5 spacecraft is growing in labs and test soil at the South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou.
The Chang’e-5 lunar probe started its 23-day space journey on November 24, carrying a variety of plant seeds, including 40 grams of rice seeds. These seeds traveled through the Van Allen belts and encountered violent sunspot activity during the trip. It was the first time Chinese researchers conducted mutation breeding experiments in outer space. The seeds successfully returned to Earth with the spacecraft.
