Rio chairman failed his biggest accountability test – The Australian Financial Review
Rio Tinto chairman Simon Thompson is departing not because of the Juukan Gorge disaster itself, but for his handling of its aftermath.
Its notable that Thompsons fellow director, Michael LEstrange, will also retire at the conclusion of this years AGM season.
LEstrange was the director who led the boards investigation of the disaster in the Pilbara, in which Rio blew up rock shelters at Juukan Gorge considered a sacred site by the traditional owners.
Arguably it was LEstranges report, and the boards reaction to it, that really cost Thompson his job.
