Video shows shark killing humpback whale off South Africa
Drone footage has captured the moment a great white shark strategically took down a humpback whale off the coast of South Africa. The shark, reportedly named Helen, was filmed taking down the 10m whale over a period of about 50 minutes.
The whale was reportedly in ill health and was trapped in a discarded fishing rope when the attack took place off Port Elizabeth in February.

Marine biologist Ryan Johnson told The Times the shark was “very strategic” about the take-down.
“There was no hesitation, it was as if she knew exactly how to go about it,” Mr Johnson said.
He said the shark managed to open an artery in the whale’s tail, then sat back and watched for about 30 minutes before attacking the head until the whale drowned.

“Even though she was a fraction of his weight, she was attempting to roll him over, pulling him down to get his blow hole under the water, apparently in an effort to drown him,” Mr Johnson said.
“She managed to weigh him down under the water and he just didn’t come up again,” he added.
Mr Johnson was unable to say whether the shark acted on instinct or intelligence.
He said the whale’s mottled skin suggested it was in poor health.
The shark was reportedly named Helen and tagged in a 2013 study led by Mr Johnson.
