‘Regrettable’ Fremantle tent city provided no long-term help to homeless, report finds
Fremantle’s tent city, which began as an operation to feed vulnerable people on Boxing Day, ended as a “regrettable event” which failed to provide long-term help to the homeless people camping there, a report has found.
Key points:
- The tent city erupted into a blame game over who was responsible
- The report said the initial decision to offer free food appeared ‘low risk’
- The City is looking at a more formal approval process for charity events
The tent city was established at Pioneer Park on Boxing Day last year and was home to dozens of people throughout the month it was set up.
It caused controversy among authorities and locals, and erupted into a blame game over who was responsible and what would be done to fix it.
