Ugandan rebel commander Dominic Ongwen convicted of war crimes by International Criminal Court
A former Ugandan child soldier who became a commander of the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has been convicted of dozens of crimes by the International Criminal Court.
Key points:
- Dominic Ongwen was himself recruited as a child by the LRA, but was promoted to senior leadership
- In a legal first, he was also convicted for the crime of forced pregnancy
- LRA founder, Joseph Kony, remains a fugitive
Dominic Ongwen faces a maximum punishment of life imprisonment after being convicted of 61 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The crimes include widespread rape, sexual enslavement, child abductions, torture and murder, including killings of babies.
A sentence will be issued at a later date.
