UK starts door-to-door COVID testing in eight regions to stop South African strain from spreading
England has begun COVID-19 testing every household in some communities as authorities try to snuff out a new variant of the coronavirus before it undermines the country’s nationwide vaccination program.
Key points:
- Health Secretary Matt Hancock says it is “critical” for residents of eight localities to stay at home
- Public health officials are concerned by the mutation in the virus’s characteristic spike protein, which may make existing vaccines less effective
- University of Leicester clinical virologist Julian Tang says the mutation was “not entirely unexpected”
Officials are dispatching home testing kits and mobile testing units to 80,000 residents of eight areas where the variant, first identified in South Africa, is known to be spreading.
