Mr Leavers said they needed to make sure caregivers and parents “step up to the mark”.

“Bail is a privilege, it is not a right, and sadly these people, when they’re released on bail, they go back to an unsupported, uncaring environment,” he said.

Besides GPS tracking anklets for juveniles on bail, Mr Leavers said there also needed to be more resources targeted at the juvenile offender demographic, and a national summit on youth crime should be introduced.

“We’re naive to think this is just happening in Queensland,” he said.

“We’ve got to do something to change things for the future because what we’re doing now is not working.”
