Islamic State ‘deputy’ Yaser al-Issawi killed in Iraq, Iraqi PM says

Security forces have killed Abu Yaser al-Issawi, an Islamic State commander who had claimed to be the leader of the group in Iraq and its “deputy caliph”, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has said.

“Our heroic armed forces have eliminated Daesh (Islamic State) commander Abu Yaser Al-Issawi as part of an intelligence-led operation,” Mr Kadhimi tweeted, referring to IS by its Arabic acronym.

“I gave my word to pursue the Daesh terrorists, we gave them a thundering response.”
