New Zealand’s COVID-19 community transmission case likely came from returned traveller in hotel

New Zealand authorities have confirmed a woman who tested positive for COVID-19 while in the community likely contracted it from another returned traveller on the same floor as her room in her quarantine hotel.
Key points:
- The 56-year-old woman tested negative twice during her quarantine, before developing symptoms later
- The infection is the South African variant of COVID-19
- New Zealand’s first community transmission case in two months has prompted a rush for testing
The 56-year-old had recently returned from Europe and had quarantined at Auckland’s Pullman Hotel, spending 14 days in quarantine and twice testing negative before returning home on January 13.
She later developed symptoms and tested positive.
