China rescues first worker trapped in Shandong gold mine, state media reports

Rescuers in China have lifted to the surface one of 22 workers trapped in a gold mine for two weeks after an explosion, according to state media.

- TV footage showed a miner, exhausted and blindfolded, being lifted out of the mine shaft and covered in a blanket
- Authorities have said it could take up to two weeks to rescue the remaining miners

The worker was rescued at 11:13am on Sunday and sent to hospital for treatment, state media agency Xinhua reported.
The miner was “extremely weak”, according to a post on state broadcaster CCTV’s Weibo account.
