Love him or hate him, Americans recognise Donald Trump has changed their country in a way that is palpable and long-lasting.
Trump blew through the guard-rails of the American system of democracy in a way no president has before, shaking up its traditional leadership structures in the process.
Now those people are warning of a dire need for new, stronger safeguards.
On entering office, Trump’s successor Joe Biden told Americans, democracy had faced an attack but it “has prevailed”.
But he also laid out an unfortunate truth: America’s democracy has proven fragile and Trump has laid bare a multitude of weaknesses.
