As the United States heralds a new political era, Donald Trump’s final act as president is raising some eyebrows.
In the lead up to Joe Biden’s inauguration, Mr Trump pardoned and commuted the sentences of 144 people — including former White House aide Steve Bannon, Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy, and former congressman Randall ‘Duke’ Cunningham.
“It wasn’t about draining the swamp. It was the swamp,” said Sanjay Bhandari, a former Justice Department prosecutor who secured a guilty plea from Cunningham, who accepted more than $2.4 million in homes, yachts and other bribes in exchange for government contracts.
