Disney released “TRON Legacy” a decade ago, the film arriving thirty years after the original. Though it snagged an impressive $400 million worldwide, its costly $170 million budget meant it wasn’t enough of a success to guarantee a franchise.
Thus plans for a third film have waxed and waned over the years. We do know Disney+ had plans to move ahead with a “TRON” TV series led by filmmaker John Ridley, but that project was canceled before production began.
There has been talk of something loosely in development film-wise, but the reports have never really panned out. This week saw some chatter again on several fronts and, while it’s unclear if any of this holds more water than the previous reports, it does offer some hope.
First up, a DisInsider report claimed that a new “TRON” film with Jared Leto still attached as the lead is still in the works with a search for a director underway.
The veracity of that report is unclear, indeed the Leto casting talk as though it’s a new thing is off as he’s been attached since 2017. However, The Playlist has independently confirmed a “TRON” project was being shopped to potential directors this past spring.
Then there’s Mitchell Leib, the President of Music & Soundtracks at Disney who spoke on a recent episode of the Light the Fuse podcast and reportedly suggested things are moving further along faster than expected. He indicates he’s had a meeting with Daft Punk’s manager for preliminary discussions about a third film:
“We’re looking at making a sequel to Tron now, we’re looking at Tron 3, and we’ve got a great script, I mean a really phenomenal script that we’re very excited about. Whereas the timing wasn’t right to have done it years ago, I think we feel like the timing is right now, and I feel like we’ve learned a lot of lessons from that last movie..
