Gunmen kill nine mourners during wake in Mexico
Gunmen have opened fire during a wake in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, killing nine people and injuring another.
Key points:
- An expert said it appeared to be an attack by the Jalisco New Generation cartel against the dead man’s family
- The area is at the centre of the bloody turf war between drug cartels acting through local gangs
- The conflict has made Guanajuato Mexico’s deadliest state
Public safety officials in the city of Celaya said in a statement the gunmen arrived late on Thursday night and took aim at a group of people.
The victims were standing outside a home in a low-income neighbourhood where a wake was being held for a young man who himself had been gunned down nearby a couple of days before.
