As the new year begins and the evening sky darkens, Jupiter and Saturn will be closely paired low in the southwest. The two planets will slowly drift apart and set earlier as January passes.
Mercury will join these two gas giants during the second week of the month, forming a triangle with them on Jan. 10 very low in the west-southwest. All three planets will be within a circle about 2 degrees wide. Dont wait to view them, for the last of the three will set around 6 p.m. local time.
