A young boy was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after falling 20 metres down a waterfall north of Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.

Paramedics were called to the waterway off Cedar Creek Road at Cedar Creek, 25 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, about midday.

Ambulance officers, including specialist critical care paramedics, reached the child, who suffered rib and back pain from the fall.

The Rescue 500 helicopter, part of the state government-owned QGAir, winched the boy out.

He was on his way to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a stable condition within two hours of emergency services being called.
