Tropical low in gulf tipped to form first cyclone of 2021 season

Australia could experience its first cyclone landfall for the season by early Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology has advised, with a tropical low over the western Gulf of Carpentaria expected to intensify across the weekend.
A cyclone watch is now in place from the Northern Territory-Queensland border to Pormpuraaw on the western Cape York Peninsula coast for the system, sitting 315 kilometres north-west of Mornington Island as of 10am Saturday.

Moving south-east at 7km/h, the bureau has said the low could develop into a tropical cyclone during Sunday night over the southern gulf, bringing gale-force winds to coastal and island communities.
