Masks set to be part of Melbourne’s virus defence – The Australian Financial Review
Victoria’s chief health officer says the state is looking to “use all the conceivable tools” to help control the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I think masks are now going to become a very primary way we’re going to try and curtail the spread of this infection, particularly in healthcare settings.”
Dr Rait said US data confirmed that if worn properly, masks were “80 per cent as effective as a lockdown”.
He said masks could be particularly effective to address the problem of asymptomatic transmission. Research has suggested the virus is at its most infectious two days before symptoms show.
While promoting more mask use, medical experts warned of the dangers of not using them correctly.
“I think people will need to make their own masks,” Professor Sutton said.
“I don’t think there should be a rush on buying single-use masks, for example, and some masks that are able to be purchased retail aren’t good for rewashing and reuse over days and days.
“We’re working up communications materials that will give a bit of guidance
