Canberra public servant who raped colleague and fled the country could be released within days
A public servant convicted of crawling into a colleague’s bed and raping her has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.
Key points:
- Haider Ali fled the country during his first trial in 2016, forcing a retrial once he was extradited from the UK
- The court had heard the woman repeatedly said “no” to Ali before he raped her
- Ali could be eligible for parole within days, accounting for time already served
But Haider Ali, 38, will be eligible for parole from Sunday, taking into account time he has already served in prison.
Ali had to be tried twice in the ACT Supreme Court, because his first trial was abandoned after he fled the country in 2016 while the jury was deliberating.
