Wet summer ahead for Queensland as La Niña shows ‘similar strength’ to system behind Cyclone Yasi

Recent severe weather is a sign of what is to come this summer, the Bureau of Meteorology says, with the predicted La Niña event to reach a “similar strength” to the system that brought Cyclone Yasi and major flooding to Queensland nearly a decade ago.
Key points:
- Similar La Nina conditions contributed to a cyclone that hit the Qld coast in 2011 and caused major damage
- Wet weather early in the season means river systems are more susceptible to flooding if cyclones arrive
- The outlook suggests there is a lot more rain ahead this season, the Bureau of Meteorology says
Over the weekend, wet weather delivered parts of Queensland hundreds of millimetres of rain, dangerous tides and coastal erosion.
