The ACT could decriminalise small amounts of illicit drugs next year — but what does that mean for users?

Advocates for drug harm reduction have welcomed a draft bill from an ACT Labor backbencher to decriminalise personal possession of illicit substances, saying it will take pressure of the courts system while giving drug users better access to health services.
Labor MLA Michael Pettersson announced yesterday he will introduce the bill to the ACT Legislative Assembly next year, saying a prohibition approach to drug use has failed.
The aim is to help drug users avoid falling into the criminal justice system.
But it could have wider impacts, including on the ACT’s courts system.
What would be allowed if drugs are decriminalised?
If passed, the amendments to the Drugs of Dependence Act would mean those caught with a small amount of illicit drugs…
