US on eve of ‘D-Day’ vaccine rollout as weary nation looks to turn tide against coronavirus
US officials say the first COVID-19 vaccine will begin arriving in states on Monday morning (local time).
Key points:
- Initially, about 3 million doses will to be shipped nationwide
- The vaccine must be stored and shipped at about 70 degrees below zero
- Concerns that a shot was rushed out could undermine vaccination efforts
The Government on Friday gave the final go-ahead to the injections needed to end an outbreak that has killed nearly 300,000 Americans.
Trucks will roll out on Sunday morning as shipping companies UPS and FedEx begin delivering Pfizer’s vaccine to nearly 150 distribution centres, said Army General Gustave Perna of Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration’s vaccine development program.
