Regulator announces antidepressants and youth suicide investigation – The Australian Financial Review
An initial review, which found a correlation between the rising use of antidepressants and the risk of youth suicide, recommends a deep dive into the data.
Every year, more than 100,000 Australians under 18 are dispensed antidepressants despite the drugs not being approved for use in that age group, and despite warnings from the manufacturers they should not be used in this group.
The drugs are dispensed off label to young people, mostly by GPs rather than psychiatrists.
