Major Byron Bay housing project approved for 150 new residences as locals ‘spearhead the resistance’
Community efforts to stop a housing development on the western side of Byron Bay have been put to rest by the New South Wales Land and Environment Court.
Key points:
- The Land and Environment Court has approved a 149-lot development at West Byron
- The development will include habitat zones for koalas and other endangered species
- The project includes about 50 per cent fewer lots than is allowable under its zoning
The court this week approved stage one of the controversial West Byron development, which is now known as Harvest Estate.
Sydney-based commercial real estate company Tower Holdings, under its subsidiary Villa World Byron Bay, took the project to court after it was refused by the Northern Regional Planning Panel in April last year.
