Queensland detects largest single-day rise in COVID cases for months

Experts say the sudden rise in cases shows the hotel quarantine system is working as intended.

Griffith University infect­ious diseases expert Nigel McMillan says as coronavirus cases increase in many parts of the northern hemisphere, more cases will be detected in hotel quarantine.

“It’s a reflection of the fact that things are in a poor state of control internationally, particularly the US and Europe, and that people returning to Australia just have a higher likelihood of coming back infected,” Professor McMillan said.

“It points to the success of our hotel quarantine program in protecting us and detecting those cases.”
