It might just be the most polarising jersey in modern-day New Zealand sport and on Friday night it will make its NRL game-day debut.
The Warriors will pull on the ‘bushshirt’ – infamously labelled by one league fan as “the worst jersey in the history of sports” – when they take on the Titans on the Gold Coast this Friday night.
The yellow and black chequered number went viral, mostly for the wrong reasons, when it was first released by the Warriors in November last year, as one of their five (yes, they really do have five) jerseys for 2020.

Hunting for their first back-to-back wins since the 2018 season, the Warriors will be dressed for the occasion as they look to back up from last Saturday’s 26-16 victory over the Broncos. The infamous jersey was touted as being more like hunting apparel than a rugby league jersey when it was released.

Picnic blanket comparisons were another frequently used term when the jersey was unveiled late last year.
Blake Green and the Warriors have been training in the bushshirt in 2020.
It was designed to be worn in Wellington when the Warriors took their home game against the Cowboys on the road but the Covid-19 pandemic put a line through those plans.
The Warriors’ website said the jersey was “going to turn heads”. It wasn’t wrong.
The Warriors’ website has struck again this week with another bold claim, labelling the bushshirt jersey as “universally-loved”.
“When the bushshirt surfaced November last year it’s mere existence rocked the very foundations of society. Stunned by the sheer greatness of the jersey fans soon took to Twitter to share of its beauty, likening the jersey to the amazing picnic blanket, the great Humphrey B. Bear and even the trustworthy tea towel,” the Warriors’ website reported this week.

The jersey does have its fans, but they appear to be greatly outnumbered by the detractors, judging by the unscientific metric of social media.
Win, lose or draw against the Titans, the bushshirt is a strong chance to be just as much of a talking point as the Blake Green saga by the final whislte.
