Bill to safeguard two NT federal members sent to House of Representatives after passing Senate
An attempt to stop more than 1.4 million square kilometres of land being left with just one lower house representative is a step closer to reality.

- A bill to guarantee the NT two lower house seats has received bipartisan support in the Senate
- The bill will now be voted on in the House of Representatives
- But the legislation will not permanently guarantee both the NT’s seats
The Coalition’s Electoral Amendment (Territory Representation) Bill passed the Senate earlier today.
If passed in the House of Representatives, it would reverse a July determination by the Australian Electoral Commission that the Northern Territory is only entitled to one federal seat because of its declining population.
